Local chat can work without an internet connection after the app, model, and required model-runner files are downloaded. Prepare the exact workflow you need, then test it after restarting while disconnected. A model that answered once online has not established that the whole workflow can start offline.
This suits travel, unreliable connections, drafting from material already on your computer, and experiments that should not depend on a hosted model. It cannot provide fresh web research without a connection. Offline operation also does not prevent another person using the computer from reading local files.
Prepare before you leave the connection
- Install Ollama or LM Studio.
- Download one model that fits your computer. Finish the download rather than relying on a model listed in an online search result.
- Load it and complete a short conversation. This gives the app a chance to obtain any required model-runner files while online.
- Check the selected provider. Choose a downloaded local model, not a cloud-labelled model or a hosted provider.
- Disable web search and tools that fetch remote material for this test.
- Prepare any document-search model, parser, or other dependency required by your document app. Test a harmless document before bringing confidential material into the workflow.
For Ollama, ollama list shows downloads available to that server. Run an exact name from the list; ollama run with a model you have never downloaded may try to fetch it. In LM Studio, open the local model list and load a model from that list rather than searching the download catalogue.
Test a fresh offline session
Disconnect Wi-Fi and wired internet, and disable any other active connection. Close and reopen the app. On an important trip, restarting the computer offline is a stronger practical check than leaving an already-loaded conversation open.
Start a new chat and give it text that exists only in your prompt:
Rewrite the following note in two sentences. Keep both times unchanged: “Our meeting is at 10:30. Please send the draft by 09:00.”
You should receive an answer without a sign-in, model download, or remote-provider request. Check that it preserves the two times. Reopen a second new chat and repeat; a cached answer or already-open page is not enough.
If documents are part of your plan, attach a harmless file containing an unusual fact, such as “The sample meeting room is named Juniper.” Ask which room is named, then ask about a detail absent from the file. You want the correct room and an admission that the missing detail is not supplied. This checks document access and some answer discipline; it does not establish that every future document will be read accurately.
Keep optional cloud functions out of the workflow
Ollama documents OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 as a way to disable its cloud functions. Set it for the app or service that actually runs Ollama and restart that process. An environment variable typed into an unrelated terminal does not necessarily change an already-running desktop app or Linux service. Follow the platform-specific configuration instructions linked below.
This setting covers Ollama's cloud functions, not every connected app. A browser workspace may still have a hosted embedding provider, remote tool, or web search service. Check those separately.
LM Studio's offline documentation distinguishes core local chat, document chat, and the local server from online model discovery, downloads, and update checks. If you use Bionic, MCP, a remote connection, or another optional integration, examine that workflow's own requirements as well.
When offline use fails
| Failure | What to check |
|---|---|
| The app wants to download a model | Was this exact model downloaded and loaded before disconnecting? |
| Ordinary chat works but document chat fails | Are extraction, embeddings, and any parser dependencies available locally? |
| A tool reports a network error | Does the tool fetch web pages, call another server, or require sign-in? |
| Ollama cannot connect | Start the local app or service; internet access does not repair a stopped local server |
| Output is old or factually wrong | A downloaded model's knowledge is not live information; supply current material yourself |
Keep an ordinary text editor and your source files available too. A battery limit, insufficient memory, or a damaged download can still interrupt an offline session.
For confidentiality, continue with the privacy guide. It covers local files, provider selection, tools, and server exposure, which are separate from whether a conversation works without internet.
