Choose a Local AI Model for Writing

By 4 min read

Try a small instruction-following model with your own writing before downloading a large one. Qwen3 4B is a useful starting candidate for short rewrites and outlines; Qwen3 8B is an option to compare if your memory allows it. Choose the answer that preserves your meaning and sounds appropriate for the reader, rather than choosing solely by parameter count.

This workflow suits drafting emails, improving clarity, planning a piece, and revising fiction or ordinary prose. A writing model can invent facts, citations, or a speaker's intent. It should not supply unchecked legal authorities or turn uncertain source material into confident conclusions.

Choose a small, supported model first

Install LM Studio for a desktop chat interface or Ollama for a command-line and local API workflow. Use a chat or instruction-following download supported by the selected app.

For an initial Ollama conversation:

ollama run qwen3:4b

The packaged Qwen3 4B download uses Q4_K_M model compression. That is a specific download, not a promise that every 4-bit Qwen3 file behaves identically. In LM Studio, check the publisher, model size, format, and quantization before downloading. Consult Qwen3 4B and the memory calculator for the exact selection.

On a computer with limited memory, begin with one paragraph and a modest context. For a larger draft, estimate the text using the token counter, leaving room for instructions and the answer. Token counts vary with the model's tokenizer, so an estimate from another tokenizer needs that qualification.

Give the model a brief it can follow

Specify the reader, purpose, length, tone, and facts it must preserve. For example:

Rewrite this note for a client in fewer than 100 words. Use plain English and a calm tone. Preserve every date and amount. Do not add advice or facts. After the draft, list any ambiguity you could not resolve. /no_think

Then paste a harmless sample note. The /no_think suffix is supported by the original Qwen3 models when their thinking controls allow it; it is not a general setting for all writing models.

For fiction, give a short scene objective, point of view, character constraints, and a sample of the intended voice. Ask for one scene or a revision of one passage. Generating an entire novel at once makes it harder to preserve continuity and inspect the result.

Compare answers with the same passage

Keep the original text outside the chat. Try the same brief in separate new conversations with each candidate. Check:

CheckWhat a useful answer does
MeaningKeeps qualifications, conditions, and uncertainty
FactsPreserves names, dates, amounts, and attribution
VoiceMatches the requested reader and tone without copying generic phrasing
LengthMeets the limit without dropping essential points
RestraintFlags missing information instead of inventing it

For a concrete test, include “The meeting may be moved to Friday if both parties agree.” Reject a rewrite that says “The meeting is on Friday.” Fluent prose is not enough when the condition changes the meaning.

A successful working setup produces a useful draft, lets you verify it against the original, and remains responsive through another short revision. This does not establish accuracy for every topic or a permanent preference between models.

Fix problems by the symptom

If the answer is generic, supply a short example of the voice you want and explain what to retain. If facts change, ask for a smaller edit and compare every factual sentence against the source. If the model rambles, set a shorter output target and inspect the model's supported thinking setting. If a long draft loses details, work section by section with a concise continuity note.

Do not assume that lowering randomness makes a model truthful. It may repeat the same error more consistently. Use the poor-answers guide for wrong or repetitive output.

Offline writing and sensitive material

After downloading the model, test a fresh offline session. Local writing does not need live web access, but research and remote tools do. Check local chat storage and any cloud providers before using confidential drafts; the privacy guide explains those separate choices.

Qwen's model cards identify the original Qwen3 4B and 8B models under Apache 2.0. The license of an app, a model, and any connected service are separate. Check the exact download's terms for your intended use.
